Father's Day Event
The Housing Authority of the City of Lafayette hosted its annual Father's Day event on Saturday, June 25 at the Macon Road Development. Fathers were encouraged to attend with their children to enjoy water filled fun jumps, snow cones, punch, hot dogs and chips. The event was sponsored by the Housing Authority, newly elected Resident Council officers and members and the Southwest Louisiana Center for Health Services (SWLA) who handed out toothbrushes and toothpaste and explained to children the proper way of brushing. Adults were given information on Medicare and other health benefits by representatives from SWLA.
This event was held to promote the importance of a "Father/Father Figure" in a child's life. Over 24 million children, 1 out of 3 nationally, live in father-absent homes. These children face increased risks for poor outcomes across every measure of child well-being.
According to the National Fatherhood Initiative, children from "father-absent" homes are more likely to:
- Be poor
- Be abused or neglected
- Use drugs
- Drop out of school
- Commit crime
- Suffer poorer physical health outcomes
